The Local Government Summit Group has called for the establishment of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to streamline local government administration across Nigeria.
In a communiqué signed by the Secretary of the Board of Governance, Mr. Tijani Muhammed, the Group announced plans to collaborate with the 36 Chairmen of State Local Government Service Commissions. This collaboration aims to secure funding from development partners for designing a uniform framework for local government administration.
The communiqué, issued after the fourth edition of the Local Government Economic Summit, highlights several initiatives, including federal government-backed mapping of over 8,000 wards and the creation of a robust online platform to represent all 774 local government areas. These efforts aim to promote investment opportunities across Nigeria’s diverse wards.
The Group also outlined plans for local governments to provide land for crop production, a move intended to bolster food security. Additionally, it emphasized the importance of reducing state interference in council operations, urging state governments to support local autonomy.
The communiqué further advocated for electoral reforms to ensure the election of credible leaders at both state and local levels, signaling the need for a transparent and effective governance structure.
This coordinated effort is expected to transform the local government landscape, fostering economic growth and improving service delivery nationwide.
